Connie and Marion

August R. Carnevali,
Marion's husband,
tells us:

The photo was taken in 1947. Marion was 9 years old. Marion and her family were refugees from Nazi Germany and had miraculously escaped to a Jewish refugee colony in Shanghai, China in 1938 (at the time under Japanese occupation). When they came to America in May of 1947, none could speak English. Marion went to summer school that year to learn English and prepare her for the fall session. Connie Francis helped and tutored her and was a pupil in that class. The Star Ledger came to the school to do an article and this photo was taken and published.
